We all carry a toolkit of ideas we use to make sense of the world, mostly without noticing. Mental models are simply those ideas made deliberate. A mental model is a small, reusable way of thinking about how something works, a lens you can pick up to see a problem more clearly. The more good lenses you have, and the better you are at choosing the right one, the clearer your decisions become. This guide explains what mental models are, walks through a few of the most useful ones, and shows how to start thinking with them in everyday Singapore life.

Each one is a compact idea about how some part of the world behaves, and having several means you are not stuck forcing every problem through the same single lens. You already use models without naming them. “Supply and demand” is a model. “You get what you incentivise” is a model. Thinking in mental models just means collecting a handful of these deliberately and reaching for them on purpose.

  • First principles thinking. Instead of reasoning from what everyone assumes, you break a problem down to the basic facts you are sure of, then build back up from there. It is useful when you feel stuck inside “the way things are done” and want to question whether it has to be that way.
  • Second-order thinking. Ask not just what happens next, but what happens after that. A choice that looks good immediately can look poor once you follow its knock-on effects. Cutting sleep to work more feels productive on the first order and backfires on the second.
  • Opportunity cost. Every yes is a no to something else. Saying yes to a commitment means the time is no longer available for anything else, so the real cost of a choice is the best thing you gave up to make it.
  • Inversion. Instead of asking how to succeed, ask how to fail, then avoid those things. Planning a project? List what would guarantee a mess, and steer clear of each one.
  • The map is not the territory. Any plan, model or summary is a simplified picture of reality, not reality itself. Hold your models loosely and update them when the world disagrees.

Notice that the last one is a warning about the others. Models are tools for thinking, not laws. When one stops fitting the facts, put it down and reach for another.

How Thinking in Models Compares to Ordinary Reasoning

It helps to see the difference a model makes on a familiar problem. Suppose you are deciding whether to take on a demanding side project.

How to Start Thinking in Mental Models

You build this habit slowly, one model at a time. Trying to memorise a long list at once does not work, because a model only sticks when you have actually used it.

  1. Learn one model properly. Pick one from above and make sure you can explain it in plain words. If you cannot explain it simply, you do not yet understand it well enough, which is the heart of the Feynman technique.
  2. Spot it in the wild. For a week, watch for situations where that one model applies. See opportunity cost in how you spend a Saturday, or second-order thinking in a decision at work.
  3. Use it out loud. When a real choice comes up, actually name the model and walk through it. “Let me invert this: what would make this go wrong?”
  4. Add the next one. Once a model feels natural, bring in another. A collection of five or six well-used models beats a memorised list of fifty.
  5. Review your calls. After a decision plays out, look back. Did the model help? Where did it mislead you? This is how your judgement sharpens over time.

Where Mental Models Help in Daily Life

These tools are not just for boardrooms. They quietly improve ordinary Singapore decisions.

  • Money choices. Opportunity cost reframes spending. The real question is not “can I afford this” but “what else could this money or time do for me?” This is general thinking, not financial advice, so treat big money moves with proper care.
  • Work and career. Second-order thinking helps you see past a shiny job offer to how the role will actually feel a year in.
  • Time and commitments. When your calendar is full and everyone wants a yes, opportunity cost and inversion help you protect what matters.
  • Untangling arguments. First principles cut through a heated debate by getting everyone back to the facts you can all agree on.

The Traps to Watch For

Thinking in mental models is powerful, but it comes with its own pitfalls, and being aware of them keeps you honest.

  • Forcing a model to fit. Not every situation needs a fancy lens. Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one, and reaching for a model just adds noise.
  • Falling in love with one model. If every problem looks like opportunity cost, you have swapped one blind spot for another. Keep a few lenses and switch between them.
  • Mistaking the model for the truth. Remember, the map is not the territory. Models simplify, and reality has a way of being messier than any tidy idea.
  • Analysing instead of deciding. Models are meant to sharpen a choice, not replace it. At some point you have to act on your best judgement.

Learning to think in mental models is a slow, quietly rewarding project. You will not transform your thinking overnight, and you do not need to. Pick up one useful lens, practise until it feels natural, then add another, and over months you will find yourself making calmer, clearer decisions without the second-guessing.
