Understanding BMI starts with a simple truth: it is a rough screening tool, not a verdict on your health. Body Mass Index takes your weight and height and produces a single number that sorts people into broad categories. It is quick, cheap and useful at a population level, but it was never designed to judge one individual body. The number is then read against standard bands. The point to hold onto is that BMI measures a ratio of weight to height, and nothing more. It does not know whether that weight is muscle, fat, bone or water. It does not know where the weight sits on your body. It simply flags that, on average across large groups, people in higher bands carry a higher statistical risk of certain conditions. For any one person, that average may or may not apply.
That is why doctors treat it as a screening step. A BMI outside the healthy range is a prompt to look closer, not a conclusion in itself.
The Singapore and Asian Cut-Offs
Singapore does not use the standard international BMI bands unchanged. Research found that many Asian populations carry a higher risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease at a lower BMI than the original cut-offs suggested. In response, the Health Promotion Board adopted revised action points so that risk is caught earlier.
Under these local guidelines, the healthy range and the points at which risk is considered raised sit lower than the standard World Health Organization bands used in many Western countries. The practical effect is that a number treated as comfortably normal elsewhere might be flagged for attention here. Where BMI Gets It Wrong

It does not adjust well for age, since older adults naturally lose muscle, nor for pregnancy, nor for people with more or less muscle than average. For growing children and teenagers, a completely different age and sex adjusted chart is used, so adult bands do not apply.
None of this makes BMI useless. It makes it partial. It is one data point among several, best read alongside other measures rather than on its own.
Better Questions Than the Number Alone
If BMI is only a starting point, what else helps build a fuller picture? A few simple measures add useful context without any special equipment.
- Waist circumference. A tape measure around the waist gives a rough read on abdominal fat, which matters for metabolic risk. Your doctor can advise on healthy ranges.
- How your clothes fit. A practical, judgement-free signal of change over time that needs no gadget at all.
- Fitness markers. How easily you climb stairs, carry groceries or walk a park connector says something a scale cannot.
- Blood markers. Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, checked at a screening, speak more directly to health than weight alone.
