Self-adhesive foam or rubber strips, sold on a roll, stick onto a flat surface and are ideal for casement doors and simpler gaps. Brush or pile strips use a fringe of dense bristles and suit sliding windows and doors, since they seal while still letting the panel glide. Door bottom seals or sweeps attach along the base of a door to block the gap at the threshold. If in doubt, peel off a short length of the old seal, take it to the hardware shop, and match the profile and width exactly, as a seal that is too thick will stop the window closing and one too thin will not seal at all.

Groove-fitted gaskets usually pull out by hand or with a flat screwdriver to lift the end, while adhesive strips peel away, often leaving residue. Second, clean the channel or surface thoroughly. Scrape off old adhesive, wipe with a little rubbing alcohol, and let it dry completely, because new self-adhesive seals will not hold on a dusty or greasy surface. Third, cut and fit. For groove types, press the new gasket into the channel starting at a corner and working along, easing it in with your fingers or a blunt tool, and cut it slightly long so the ends meet firmly. For adhesive strips, peel the backing a little at a time as you press the strip down, keeping it straight and firm into corners. Finally, test the close. Shut the window or door and check that it latches properly and that the seal compresses evenly without forcing. Trim any excess and press the ends together neatly.

Take your time at corners, as a clean corner is where most of the sealing happens. If a self-adhesive strip lifts at the ends after a day, a dab of clear silicone or the correct adhesive will hold it.

Working Safely Around Windows

Safety matters more with windows than almost any other home job, especially in high-rise flats. Never lean out of a window or overreach to work on the outer face, particularly on upper floors, and never stand on a sill or a chair balanced near an opening. Do the work from inside wherever possible, and if a seal genuinely can only be reached from the outside of a high window, that is the moment to call a professional or your building’s maintenance team rather than take a risk.
