Understanding intervals is the foundation of nearly everything else in music theory. An interval is simply the distance between two notes. Once you can name and hear these distances, chords, scales and melodies stop feeling random and start making sense.

What an Interval Is

Every interval is measured between two notes. If you play them one after the other, it is a melodic interval. If you play them together, it is a harmonic interval. Either way, the distance is the same.

Intervals are described in two parts: a number and a quality. The number tells you how many letter names the interval spans. The quality tells you the exact size. For example, “major third” and “minor third” share the same number, three, but the major third is slightly wider. Getting both parts right is what understanding intervals is all about.

Counting the Number

To find the number, count the letter names from the lower note to the higher note, including both ends. From C up to E, you count C, D, E, which is three letters, so it is some kind of third. From C up to G, you count C, D, E, F, G, which is five letters, so it is some kind of fifth.

A quick warning: always count inclusively, starting on the bottom note as one. Beginners often count the gaps instead of the notes, which gives the wrong number every time.

Measuring the Quality with Semitones

The smallest step on a keyboard, from one key to the very next including the black keys, is a semitone, also called a half step. Two semitones make a tone, or whole step. Counting semitones lets you pin down the exact quality of an interval.

The five main qualities are perfect, major, minor, augmented and diminished. Fourths, fifths and octaves come in perfect versions. Seconds, thirds, sixths and sevenths come in major and minor versions. When you widen an interval by a semitone it becomes augmented, and when you narrow it by a semitone it becomes diminished.

Why Intervals Matter

Intervals are the building blocks of chords. A major chord is just a major third stacked with a minor third on top. A minor chord flips that order. Once you can spot a major third versus a minor third, you can build and recognise chords without memorising every shape.

Intervals also shape melody. The leap at the start of a famous tune, the gentle steps of a lullaby, the dramatic jump in a chorus, all of these are intervals doing their work. When you understand them, you can write melodies on purpose rather than by luck.

A Worked Example

Suppose you see the notes C and A written together and you want to name the interval. First, count the letters: C, D, E, F, G, A, which is six letters, so it is a sixth. Next, count the semitones from C up to A: that is nine semitones. Nine semitones for a sixth is the major version, so the interval is a major sixth. It has that warm, sweet quality you hear at the opening of many pop ballads.

Now lower the A to A flat. The letters are still C to A, so it is still a sixth, but the distance shrinks to eight semitones. That makes it a minor sixth, which sounds a touch more wistful. Notice how the number stayed the same while only the quality changed.

Hearing Intervals, Not Just Counting Them

Naming intervals on paper is useful, but the real goal is recognising them by ear. A reliable trick is to link each interval to a song you already know.

  • Perfect fourth: the first two notes of “Here Comes the Bride”.
  • Perfect fifth: the opening of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, from the first note to the third.
  • Major third: the first two notes of “When the Saints Go Marching In”.
  • Octave: the leap in “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on the word “Some, where”.

Pick one anchor song per interval, then test yourself daily. Over a few weeks, understanding intervals by ear becomes second nature.

A Short Daily Drill

  • Play a random note, then play a second note and name the interval before checking.
  • Sing an interval from a starting note, then play it to see how close you were.
  • Take a simple melody you like and label two or three of its intervals.

Inversions in Brief

If you flip an interval so the lower note jumps above the higher one, you get its inversion. A perfect fifth turns into a perfect fourth, and a major third turns into a minor sixth. A neat shortcut is that the two numbers always add up to nine, and major swaps with minor. This is handy for double checking your work and for seeing how harmony connects.
