If your photos keep coming out too dark, too bright or a little blurry, the fix almost always comes down to three settings. Together they make up the exposure triangle, and once you understand how aperture, shutter speed and ISO trade off against each other, you stop guessing and start deciding. This guide explains each one plainly, with everyday Singapore examples you can try today on any camera or even your phone in pro mode.
Exposure simply means how bright or dark your final image is. The exposure triangle is a way of picturing the three controls that set that brightness, because changing one almost always means adjusting another to keep things balanced.
What the Exposure Triangle Actually Is
Think of exposure as filling a glass with light. You can pour faster, pour for longer, or use a more sensitive glass that fills with less. Aperture, shutter speed and ISO are those three taps, and the exposure triangle is just a reminder that they work as a team.
Photographers measure light in “stops”. One stop means doubling or halving the light. Open up one stop and the image gets twice as bright; close down one stop and it gets half as bright. Each of the three settings can add or remove light in stops, which is why you can brighten with one and darken with another and land in the same place. The clever part is that each setting also changes the look of the photo in its own way, so the choice is never only about brightness.
Aperture: How Much Light and How Much Is Sharp
Aperture is the opening inside the lens that lets light through, and it is written as an f-number such as f/2.8 or f/11. Here is the part that trips up every beginner: a smaller f-number means a wider opening and more light, while a bigger f-number means a narrower opening and less light. So f/2.8 is wide and bright, and f/16 is narrow and dim.
Aperture also controls depth of field, meaning how much of the scene is in focus front to back:
- A wide aperture (small f-number like f/1.8) gives a shallow depth of field. Your subject is sharp and the background melts into a soft blur. This is lovely for a portrait against the Gardens by the Bay greenery or a plate of chicken rice at a hawker centre.
- A narrow aperture (large f-number like f/11) keeps much more in focus, front to back. This suits the Marina Bay skyline at blue hour or a wide shot down a Chinatown shophouse street, where you want the whole scene crisp.
If you only remember one thing: wide aperture for a blurry background, narrow aperture for everything sharp.
Shutter Speed: Freezing or Blurring Motion
Shutter speed is how long the camera lets light hit the sensor, measured in seconds or fractions of a second, such as 1/1000 or 1/30. A fast shutter (like 1/1000) lets in light for a very short time, so it freezes motion. A slow shutter (like 1/15 or one full second) lets in light for longer, so moving things blur.
This gives you two creative choices:
- Fast shutter to freeze action: catch a footballer at the field, splashing water at East Coast Park, or a bird taking off at the Botanic Gardens.
- Slow shutter for deliberate blur: smooth out flowing water, or capture light trails from traffic along the CBD at night. For slow shutters you will need to rest the camera on something steady or use a tripod, or the whole frame turns to mush.
There is also camera shake to watch. When handholding, very slow shutter speeds pick up the tiny wobble of your hands. A common rule of thumb is to keep the shutter speed at least as fast as your focal length, so with a wider lens you can go a bit slower, and with a zoomed-in lens you need to keep it faster.
ISO: Sensitivity and the Cost of Noise
ISO controls how sensitive the sensor is to light. A low ISO such as 100 is not very sensitive and gives the cleanest image. A high ISO such as 6400 is much more sensitive, so it brightens a dark scene, but it comes at a price: noise, the grainy, speckled texture you see in dim photos.
The honest trade-off is this. On a bright day at Marina Barrage, keep ISO low for clean, crisp files. Indoors at a dim kopitiam or shooting a night market, you may have to raise ISO so the shutter can stay fast enough to avoid blur. A slightly noisy sharp photo beats a clean blurry one every time, so do not be afraid of ISO when you need it. How much noise you can accept depends on your camera, so test yours in low light and find the highest ISO you are happy with.
Balancing the Three Together
Because all three add or remove light in stops, you can trade one for another. Here is how each setting affects both brightness and the look of your shot.

- Landscape or cityscape where everything should be sharp? Set a narrow aperture, keep ISO low, and use a slower shutter on a tripod.
