Every time you frame a shot, your camera reads the light and decides how bright the photo should be. Metering modes control how it reads that light, and choosing the right one is the difference between a balanced photo and a blown out sky or a face lost in shadow. What Metering Actually Measures
Your camera’s light meter measures the brightness of the scene and works out an exposure that aims for a middle tone, an average grey. It does not know what you care about. It just tries to make the overall brightness look balanced.
That is why a snowy scene comes out grey and a person against a bright sky comes out as a silhouette. The meter averages the light and gets fooled by anything much brighter or darker than middle. Metering modes let you tell the camera which part of the frame to trust when it makes that calculation.
On a phone, metering usually follows wherever you tap. Tap a bright area and the photo darkens, tap a dark area and it brightens. On a dedicated camera you choose a metering pattern directly, which gives more predictable results once you understand each one.
The Main Metering Modes
Cameras generally offer three or four metering patterns. The names differ by brand but the behaviour is consistent.
Evaluative or matrix metering reads the whole frame, divides it into zones, and calculates a balanced exposure across all of them. Canon calls it Evaluative, Nikon calls it Matrix, Sony calls it Multi. It is smart, modern and right most of the time, which is why it is the sensible default for general shooting: streets, travel, family days out, most landscapes.
Centre-weighted metering reads the whole frame but gives most importance to the middle. It ignores subject position and simply favours the centre, which makes it predictable. It suits portraits where your subject sits centrally and you want their brightness prioritised over a busy background.
Spot metering reads only a tiny circle, often the centre point or your active focus point, and ignores everything else. This is the precision tool. Point it at a specific important tone, such as a face lit by harsh noon sun, and expose for that alone. It is invaluable in high contrast scenes but demands care, because point it at the wrong spot and the exposure is badly off.
Partial metering is a Canon variation, like spot but reading a slightly larger central area. Treat it as a gentler spot meter.
Reading Light In Singapore’s Harsh Conditions
Our light is a metering challenge, and a few local situations come up again and again.
Midday sun and hard shadows. Near the equator the sun climbs high and light gets brutally contrasty by late morning. Evaluative metering may split the difference and leave faces too dark. Switch to spot or centre-weighted metering on the face, or use exposure compensation to lift it.
Bright sky behind a subject. Shooting someone with the Marina Bay skyline or an open sky behind them, evaluative metering sees all that brightness and darkens the person into a silhouette. Meter for the face with spot metering, or tap the face on your phone, and let the sky blow a little.
Backlit interiors. Inside a heritage shophouse or a shopping mall atrium with bright windows, the meter is pulled by the windows. Spot meter on your subject indoors so they are not left in gloom.
Blue hour and night at Marina Bay. In low, mixed light, evaluative metering usually does well, but bright signs and lights can trick it into underexposing the whole scene. Check your result, and use exposure compensation or spot metering on a mid tone to correct.
Stage and festival lighting. A single spotlit performer against a dark hall is a classic trap. Spot meter on the lit subject, or the face will be a bright blob against correctly dark surroundings.
Choosing A Mode For Common Scenes

The theme is simple. When the light is even, trust evaluative metering. When one important part of the scene is much brighter or darker than the rest, switch to spot or centre-weighted and meter deliberately for what matters.
Metering, Focus And Exposure Working Together
Metering does not act alone. Three things decide your final brightness together, and it helps to see how they connect.
Your metering mode decides which part of the frame the camera reads. Your exposure settings, aperture, shutter speed and ISO, then set the actual brightness based on that reading. Exposure compensation lets you override the meter by telling it to go brighter or darker than it wants, which is often faster than switching modes.
A common and reliable workflow is to leave the camera in evaluative metering, watch the result, and dial in exposure compensation when the scene is unusually bright or dark. Reserve spot metering for the genuinely tricky high contrast moments. This keeps you fast for everyday shooting and precise when it counts.
On a phone, tapping to set focus and exposure together is the everyday version of this, and dragging the brightness slider that appears is your exposure compensation. Locking exposure, often by tapping and holding, stops the brightness jumping around as you recompose.
Building Confidence With Metering
Metering rewards a little practice more than a lot of theory. Try this over a weekend.
- Shoot the same backlit scene, a friend against a bright window or sky, in each metering mode and compare how the face brightness changes.
- Practise spot metering on a specific tone and notice how the rest of the frame falls into place around it.
- In tricky light, take one shot, glance at the result or the histogram, then correct with exposure compensation and reshoot.
- Learn where your camera shows the meter reading in the viewfinder so you can judge exposure before firing.
Do this a few times and metering stops being a mystery. You will glance at a scene, recognise whether the light is even or contrasty, and pick the mode without thinking.
